Art Exhibitions: This Week at Alliance Française
November 23, 2022
Hello, Art Lovers. Alliance Française presents three art events, holding between the 19th of November and the 26th of November. One thing is sure – you don’t want to miss these events. They range from art exhibitions to performing arts, so there is something for everyone.
Mirroring Man: Society and Politics in Nigerian Art
The Alliance Francaise de Lagos (@af.lagos) is excited to present their final exhibition for the year 2022, “Mirroring man: Society and Politics in Nigerian Art” by the Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art @shyllonmuseum, curated by Iheanyi Onwegbuchaz @e_hanyi. You are all invited to the opening coming up this Saturday.
Mirroring Man explores the many ways through which artists have and continue to play the role of their society’s conscience by creating art forms that address several cultural and socio-political issues, ideas, and events. Artists mirror society with their works, raising awareness about key issues, stirring social change, and inspiring cultural diversity and integration. Themes of nationalism, tradition, religion, spirituality, security, environment, leadership, health, humanity, politics, and elections, among others, are creatively explored through this exhibition.
As an educational museum serving society, the YSMA recognizes the need to offer an art experience to individuals from all backgrounds and aims to help audiences learn about diverse topics through art.

The event will feature dance performances and conversations that reflect the history of how people once coexisted in Northern Nigeria, and how people lived in compounds and shared things in common. The production emphasizes the cultural heritage of the region, creating harmony between Hausa traditional Music and contemporary dance, using some of the components of a typical compound in Kaduna State before the terrorism and banditry that the state had experienced.
