Kalakuta Museum in Ikeja, Lagos, is where to experience the  world of Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s life and music career. Kalakuta Museum is located in the house where Fela lived with his family and Egypt 80 until his passing in 1997.

In the early 1970s, Kalakuta Republic served as a recording studio and a commune. However, Fela felt disillusioned with Nigeria’s corrupt military government and decided to create his independent state, defying the dictatorship.

He aimed to fight against European cultural influence and promote African traditions and lifestyles. Inside the museum, you’ll find a treasure trove of his personal belongings and artefacts, giving you a closer look at his fascinating life.

The name “Kalakuta Republic” originated from Fela’s time in prison in 1974 when he was suspected of possessing weed. His fellow prisoners humorously called the communal cell “Kalakuta Republic,” with “Kalakuta” meaning “rascal” in Swahili. Fela embraced the name and used it to symbolise his rebellious spirit.

The Kalakuta Museum officially opened on October 15, 2012, to celebrate Fela’s 74th Birthday. The Lagos State Government played a role in renovating the museum, which Total Consult Limited now manages.
